moving to manjaro linux -Screwed up

 I've been Ubuntu+XFCE person for nearly 10 years.

Ubuntu has problems of broken packages, PPA's....

the ever growing list of failed/broken packages in sudo apt update was getting tiresome.


Today, basava jayanti, day to try something new...


Installed Manjaro Linux & it was pleasant.

  1. create the bootable USB (Manjaro + XFCE full is 3.9 GB ISO)
  2. boot into USB
  3. shows up a desktop 
  4. click on the install Icon
  5. install next to ubuntu
  6. 4-5 minutes 
  7. ready to reboot
  8. remove USB
  9. BOOM Inside Manjaro

 

got my regulars vim, joplin, ibus

unable to do below 

  1. pip3 is different, missing the familiar suo pip3 install <package>.... pipx is helping.
  2. can't type in kannada

 

Installing wine (jai https://wine.htmlvalidator.com/install-wine-on-manjaro.html)

  1. pamac upgrade -a
  2. pamac install wine wine-mono wine-gecko
  3. wine --version
  4. wine winecfg
  5. wine clock

With manjaro, I intend to do things differently than the past 10 years

  1. push code daily to github/gitlab
  2. reduce rote, repetitive & drudgeful activities.
  3. stay in command line wee bit more
  4. bit more productive, active & chirpy
  5. become sunshine man, I always wanted to be..

manjaro screwed up grub & Ubuntu not booting

manjaro has screwed grub ..  Ubuntu isn't booting .. able to use root in Ubuntu recovery journalctl shows every single service failing ... i used etcher to write Manjaro boot disk.. that isn't working. I tried to write Ubuntu ISO on it but that USB is being seen by etcher or Rufus or .. as only 512 mb USB .. . don't know how to get myself out of this.    Update Aug 2025: Manjaro 25 is a Breeze to install, just works...

moved to debian Dec 13 2025 -moved out Jan 4 2026

Debian Linux 13 Moved to it Debian, it was always a Dream ...  Since I could not install Arch (it simply did not detect Hard Disk .....), wanted to move to Debian. I wanted to create lots of gifs/mp4 of Kannadiga's on tenor.com I need a light Linux Distro, but with XFCE :)  Installed Debian 13 with XFCE without any flavours   Found below things that pained me during Debian Install  Connecting Mobile Phone, selecting transfer USB files in mobile Phone.. The Phone won't get detected in Thunar or Thunar Root. Just won't show up. ery painful sudo apt-get install mtp-tools and gmptp   too won't help. sudo apt install gvfs-backends  sudo cp ~/image.jpg /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce/ vim /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf   <Nothing to do here> sudo vim /etc/default/grub  Add this line GRUB_BACKGROUND="/home/m/anna-aane.png" sudo update-grub
