moved to Linux Mint March 17 2026

 have been struggling on Manjaro/Debian/Xubuntu to get 

  1. typing peacefully Kannada text in LIbreoffice Writer  
  2. Install VLC with codecs to play videos captured from redmi mobile phone
  3. fiddle around with some coding in vim, python 

 

Any one who has suffered with Arch User Repository in 2025, will vouch, how badly Arch based packages have suffered. Vandalism from miscreants on AUR apart, Arch based Distro's need serious introspection

installing Google Chrome needs 17 packages including fakeroot, base-devel & all, but still Chrome may not work

Installing VLC & playing webm, mp4 is a nightmare. I have lost the wherewithal to  keep experimenting..

Cachy OS is big on hype. There is zero performance gain, compared to Manjaro

Tiling Window Manager's (i3wm, fluxbox, Hyprland, ...) they are not for me, some one who needs to keep shifting between 10 windows. 

 

I use an older laptop, so XFCE was my friend.

  1. Thunar & bulk rename 
  2. LED style date & time with seconds 
  3.  

Then, I played with Ubuntu Mate... Mate did not any worse than XFCE.

Immediately, with Gut feel downloaded Mint Linux with Mate (did not bother with Mint Linux with XFCE)

Aah, what a pleasure it was when

sudo apt install ibus ibus-m17n

type ibus in menu, skip the 2 popups, add kn-itrans 

ಆಹ್,   ಈ ಆನಂದ, ಪರಮಾನಂದ, ಪರಮಾನಂದ . . . . . . . . 

Mate on Linux Mint for now .. 

 

& I could see banavaasi balaga has fully taken over kannada translations of Linux Mint...

....  Few translations are uthaale, bhagwaan uthaale  

I think, Distro hopping of past 2 year's is no more.

manjaro screwed up grub & Ubuntu not booting

manjaro has screwed grub ..  Ubuntu isn't booting .. able to use root in Ubuntu recovery journalctl shows every single service failing ... i used etcher to write Manjaro boot disk.. that isn't working. I tried to write Ubuntu ISO on it but that USB is being seen by etcher or Rufus or .. as only 512 mb USB .. . don't know how to get myself out of this.    Update Aug 2025: Manjaro 25 is a Breeze to install, just works...

moved to debian Dec 13 2025 -moved out Jan 4 2026

Debian Linux 13 Moved to it Debian, it was always a Dream ...  Since I could not install Arch (it simply did not detect Hard Disk .....), wanted to move to Debian. I wanted to create lots of gifs/mp4 of Kannadiga's on tenor.com I need a light Linux Distro, but with XFCE :)  Installed Debian 13 with XFCE without any flavours   Found below things that pained me during Debian Install  Connecting Mobile Phone, selecting transfer USB files in mobile Phone.. The Phone won't get detected in Thunar or Thunar Root. Just won't show up. ery painful sudo apt-get install mtp-tools and gmptp   too won't help. sudo apt install gvfs-backends  sudo cp ~/image.jpg /usr/share/backgrounds/xfce/ vim /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf   <Nothing to do here> sudo vim /etc/default/grub  Add this line GRUB_BACKGROUND="/home/m/anna-aane.png" sudo update-grub
